HANDY ANDY'S NOVEMBER TIPS
As the nights draw in less time is spent in the garden - but there are still jobs to be done to make sure it’ll look blooming marvellous next spring and summer.

TV's 'Handy Andy' Kane has come some top tips that are not too labour intensive, but could save a lot of time and effort come next April….

Gutters can easily get blocked with fallen, rotting leaves and moss dislodged from the roof by birds. Clearing them out in the autumn can prevent future problems. All you need is a strong ladder set up at eaves level and a trowel or similar 'scooping' tool.

It is also good to keep your garden clear so rake up fallen leaves and debris from flowerbeds as if left they can rot seedling perennials and can also harbour slugs and bugs which can cause damage. Another good tip is to spike water logged areas of the lawn with a fork to improve drainage. The best way of keeping your rake and fork clean, rust free and in good condition whatever the weather is by liberally spraying them with WD-40 after use.

Plan ahead to next year. Now's the time to pot oriental lilies which give a wonderful fragrance in early summer. Keep in a sheltered place outdoors and don't allow the compost to dry out.

While nothing compliments a garden better than good looking wooden patio furniture it’s worth reading the manufacturers' label on the care of the wood if you want the chairs and table to emerge from the bad weather months unscathed. Some of the cheaper hardwoods might benefit from being stored undercover or protected with patio furniture covers. To prevent screws rusting spray liberally with WD-40. What's more you can spray the bottom six inches of a wooden patio table with WD-40 to help prevent a build-up of mildew.
